Docklands jobs double over past decade

The number of jobs in Dublin’s Docklands have doubled over the last 10 years, according to latest figures.
Over 40,000 people are now employed in the Docklands area, growing from 20,000 in 1997. Over 750,000 square metres of commercial space has also been permitted in the area in this time.
Speaking at the publication of the Docklands Authority’s Annual Report and Accounts 2007, the chairman of the Docklands Authority, Donal O'Connor, said that this rise was further highlighted by the calibre of companies based in the locality.
“The Docklands is now home to leading businesses such as Google, O2 and CitiGroup, as well as a hub for major commercial law firms,” he said.
"It is not such a long time ago that the Docklands was an economically depressed area. However, factors such as the availability of highly skilled workers, the IFSC tax incentives, high standards in urban design and office accommodation have made it a major part of the country’s economic engine.”
The Docklands Authority’s accounts have also shown that its net worth has grown from e22.5 million in May 1997, when the authority was formed, to over e177 million at the end of last year.
Mr O’Connor added that the area’s economic transformation was just one of the changes that the Docklands has gone through over the last decade.
“From the dramatic physical changes we have witnessed, as evidenced by the many new homes and offices in the Docklands, to the social and cultural regeneration of the area, the expectations of the 1997 and 2003 Master Plans have been met and very often exceeded,” he said.
A number of developments in the Docklands area are still in the works, including the Point Village, the Convention Centre, the Grand Canal Theatre, the U2 Tower, and the Sean O'Casey Community Centre.
The most significant development for the Docklands last year has been the extension of the authority’s planning powers to the Poolbeg Peninsula.
“This will enable the Docklands area to be extended and developed, and work has commenced on the preparation of a planning scheme for the 100-acre site,” Mr O’Connor explained.
