Crumlin hospital staff cuts begin to bite PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 20 June 2008
Staff cuts at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin are already beginning to take their toll on services  it was claimed last week.
Last month trade union officials at IMPACT warned that more than 100 jobs were to be axed.
The union said that a letter circulated to staff at the hospital outlined significant cuts to agency and staff numbers at the country’s largest paediatric hospital.
The circular indicted that the cuts are expected to affect most hospital departments.
The hospital has confirmed that there are planned reductions in agency and temporary staff numbers but say permanent employees will not be affected in any way. However, they could not give an indication of how many job losses were involved.
Dublin South Central TD, Deputy Aengus Ó’Snodaigh (SF) claimed last week that staff have already been let go from urology and neurology departments as well as dieticians and personnel in pastoral care, while porters are expecting to be laid off this week.
He said: “Despite the Government and HSE’s recognition that Crumlin Children’s Hospital has increased its outpatient activity by eight per cent, the number of inpatients by two per cent and the number of day cases by 12.3 per cent, it is still being penalised by the imposition of a staff cut of 120 amounting to almost 10 per cent of its workforce.”
Southside People attempted to contact hospital management last week but they were unavailable for comment.
