Husband and wife Peugeot team in record success

The efficient Peugeot 308 HDi 110bhp turbo diesel has secured its place in the 2009 Guinness Book of Records.
Husband and wife, John and Helen Taylor, set two new World Records in their standard 308 hatchback on a 25-day, 14,580km journey around the coast of Australia, when they battled rain, storms and even a cyclone to reach record status.
During the double-record breaking journey, they recorded an unprecedented 1,919km on just 60 litres of diesel fuel and an astounding average fuel consumption of 3.13 litres/100km.
The Peugeot 308 HDi 110 hatchback, equipped with its Michelin energy-saving tyres, now holds the World Record for both the highest average fuel consumption on a journey, a record previously held by a Peugeot 307 hatchback set in 2004 of 3.49 litres/100km, and the record for the furthest distance travelled on a full tank of fuel.
John Taylor, one half of the economical driving duo explained the unusual journey: “We were very aware of the strong environmental credentials of the 308 before we set out on this journey, but we had no idea that it would be such a record breaker. The Peugeot 308 has performed magnificently. The trip has been more like a holiday drive than a record attempt. The car is packed with great features and is an absolute pleasure to drive.”
Peugeot Australia’s Managing Director, Rob Dommerson, was clearly impressed with John and Helen’s achievements.
“One of the most pleasing aspects of this fantastic result with the Peugeot 308 was the fact that we achieved it in a ‘real world’ situation,” he said. “They drove via the normal highways that people would use when heading around the country, in a fashion that most Australians would be completely familiar with when they take their annual holidays. Too often, long distance driving attempts are made on closed test tracks, or in the empty country side along vast stretches of long straight roads.”
The record attempt was completed in a standard, Peugeot 308 HDi 110 by John and Helen Taylor in April 2008.
It was verified by an independent scrutineer to ensure all the requirements of the Guinness World Records’ regulations were met and all stipulations for setting the record were followed. In particular, nothing at all was removed from the car to save weight in order to save fuel. Indeed, along with Helen and John were their two large suitcases with clothes for the entire 25 day trip.
The Peugeot 308 is available with a range of fuel efficient diesel and petrol engines. The 308 1.6 petrol engine, a joint co-operation between Peugeot and BMW has just won International Engine of the Year in its category for the second year running. The efficient 1.6 HDi 90 and 1.6 HDi 110bhp 6-speed diesel models have CO2 emissions of only 120 g/km. For the Irish motoring public, this reduces the vehicle’s annual road tax bill to only e100, VRT rates to only 14 per cent and with record breaking fuel consumption, daily running costs are also reduced
