Busy weekend for Dun Laoghaire lifeboat PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 12 June 2008
The Dun Laoghaire RNLI lifeboat station has marked one of its busiest June bank holiday weekends receiving six call-outs in just three days.
Both of the station’s lifeboats responded to pleasure craft requiring assistance along the South Dublin coastline over the bank holiday weekend.
On Friday (May 30), the Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) was called to assist three persons on board a small boat that had fouled its propeller and run aground at Sandycove.
Later that evening, the lifeboat was alerted that a man had become stranded by the incoming tide at Sandymount.
The crew was then stood down as gardai were able to reach the man.
Then, on Monday (June 2), the All-Weather Lifeboat (ALB) came to the assistance of three people on board a 31-foot yacht close to the cliffs at Shankill that had run aground when the tide went out, stranding it on its side.
The lifeboat managed to secure the vessel and was able to then respond to a call from three people aboard a brand new 51-foot yacht that had lost engine power in Dublin Bay.
Both lifeboats were then able to return to the grounded yacht, which had reported taking on water. A portable salvage pump was transferred on board and the lifeboats were able to right the vessel.
The lifeboats then went straight to Dun Laoghaire Marina to assist the Irish Coastguard helicopter that was airlifting an injured woman who had fallen while on board a pleasure craft.
