New scheme brings water joy to South Dublin

The completion of a major drainage scheme at Coliemore in South Dublin will mean significant improvements for beaches across South Dublin, it was announced last week.
Earlier phases of the Dun Laoghaire Drainage Scheme had successfully eliminated the direct discharge of untreated sewage into Dublin Bay at West Pier and Bulloch Harbour.
This project completes an investment by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council of over e50 million in improving the water quality in Dublin Bay and ensures full compliance with all national and European environmental standards
By means of an underground pumping station located at the viewing platform at Coliemore Harbour, drainage flows are conveyed via a rising main and gravity sewer on Coliemore Road to a second pumping station in the grounds of the Loreto Convent. From this pumping station all the flows are then directed to the existing pumping station located at Bulloch Harbour for transfer to West Pier and onward to Ringsend for treatment.
The project is a key element in the preservation of the Blue Flag status for nearby Killiney beach and the improvement of the water quality for all forms of leisure activity. Major improvements to the viewing platform at Coliemore Harbour have been completed which also greatly enhance the amenity value of the area.
The opportunity was taken, as part of this project, to strengthen the utility infrastructure in the area, much of which was over 100 years old, through the laying of new water mains and the rehabilitation of existing sewers.
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council acknowledged the funding for the project by the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government, the National Development Plan and the European Union under their Cohesion Funding Programme.
