Residents unite to oppose development

RESIDENTS of Baldoyle and Bayside have united in anger over plans to build a new six-storey development at Seagrange Park.
At Mid-Sutton Community Centre, Bayside, Cllr Clare Daly (SP) chaired a packed meeting of locals opposed to plans to rezone the Brickfields site and build a block of 169 apartments.
It followed a presentation made by the Affordable Homes Partnership at a recent Fingal County Council meeting requesting the rezoning of the site from open space to residential.
Brian Greene, a Socialist Party representative for the area who organised the meeting, pointed out how the local community defeated previous plans.
"We yet again find ourselves fighting to save amenity lands in our area from rezoning and over development,” Mr Greene stated.
“Residents who successfully fought the previous plans in 2004 to rezone Brickfields submitted their own alternative plans for the land.
“These plans formed part of the Baldoyle’s Needs Analysis report commissioned by the council,” added Mr Greene.
A follow up meeting has been planned for July with local councillors being invited to discuss the current situation.
In a statement the Affordable Homes Partnership said they are still in consultation with the site owner.
“In the event that a recommendation is made to vary the development plan, it will be subject to public consultation,” a spokesperson told Northside People.
“The residents will have an opportunity to make their views known as part of this consultation process.”
Cian O’Callaghan, the Labour Party candidate in the Howth ward for next year’s local elections, said that under the plans as outlined, the council would have to hand public lands over to the developers.
“A section of the park lands as far as the tennis courts would also have to be transferred from Fingal County Council,” claimed Mr O’Callaghan.
“The decision by An Bord Pleanala to throw out planning permission for Bayside Shopping Centre sends a clear message to Fingal County Council that high rise developments in low rise residential areas are unacceptable.
“This is an outrageous proposal to put even more high density housing into Baldoyle.”
When contacted, Fingal County Council stated that any member of the public is welcome to make a submission for or against any application.
