AN INTERNATIONAL gay rugby tournament is to be hosted on Dublin’s Northside this month and local team Emerald Warriors say they are ready to show the world what they’re made of.The Bingham Cup, also known as the Gay Rugby World Cup, will be hosted in DCU during the Pride Festival with teams from across the globe coming together for a week of highly competitive rugby. Mr Gay Ireland, Barry Meegan, is one of the rugby enthusiasts playing for Emerald Warriors - a team formed in 2003 to provide gay, heterosexual and bisexual men the opportunity to compete both locally and internationally. Barry explained how the competition, named after Mark Bingham who was a victim of the 9/11 attacks in New York, is more than just a social event for the gay community. “The last one was held in New York and before that London, they were a bit more confident so our preparations have been really tough as the host nation,” Barry stated. “We were competing against Sydney and Paris to host this event and we are proud to have won with our bid. “There are some very serious teams coming over and we have been in training since last year, but at the end of the day we are the Irish and we like to socialise when things are over - the social aspect is important.” The Warriors have gone from strength to strength since first taking part in the Bingham Cup in 2004 - entering the Leinster J4 league for the first time this year. “The Bingham cup is tiered with a number of different prizes and I think we have a very good chance of winning something,” Barry said. “These days I am more interested in the Leinster league to be honest and with our new coach we are starting to become serious competitors.” The cup is taking place from June 13 to June 15 at DCU Sports Grounds, Ballymun Road, Glasnevin and over 30 teams will be competing. Matches begin at 10am each day and run until 6pm each evening. Spectator entry is free of charge. |
