Camogie captain attends launch

DUBLIN’S Louise O’Hara was in Croke Park on May 27 to help launch the 2008 Gala All-Ireland Camogie Senior, Intermediate and Junior Championships.
President of the Camogie Association, Liz Howard, was joined at the launch by the captains and managers of all 27 counties competing in this year’s championships, together with Gary Desmond, chief executive of Gala.
The Dublin captain believes that the 2008 Championships will be as tight as 2007.
“There’s a great buzz around the camp this year,” said Ms O’Hara.
“We’re training well and, touch wood, we only have the one injury so we’re fighting fit and healthy for the championship.
“We were actually pretty happy that we were drawn in the tougher of the two league groups because there’s no point entering a competition if you don’t want to play the best teams.
“While the results weren’t what we were looking for, our performances were excellent so we’re ready for the championship.”
Ms O’Hara believes that any one of seven teams can win this year.
“Nobody was talking about Wexford last year and they came out and won, so we feel we can do that too,” Ms O’Hara added.
Reigning champions Wexford will be hoping to retain their crown.
However, there will be several sides aiming to relieve them of the O’Duffy Cup including Dublin, who will be hoping to build on some impressive performances last year.
Liz Howard said: “In 2007, the Gala All Ireland Senior and Junior Camogie finals were the best Gaelic finals of the year.
“We anticipate a great championship season again this year.
“The partnership between camogie and Gala is a good fit, both growing in popularity and profile.”
Gary Desmond, chief executive of Gala, said: “Our partnership with the Camogie Association and extended sponsorship, including both the Senior and Junior Championships, represents the success and growth of this relationship over the past few years.
“This year, we are pleased to announce a new sponsorship deal that will see the Gala All-Ireland Camogie Championships running until 2010.
“The six-figure sum firmly cements our partnership with the Camogie Association for the foreseeable future,” added Mr Desmond.
