Gardai continue to investigate park blaze

GARDAI are continuing their investigations into a fire that ripped through a container at a picturesque park in north county Dublin.
The May 22 fire, which Fingal County Council is treating as suspicious, completely destroyed the container that was used as a changing room for football teams at Malahide Castle.
Visitors to Malahide Castle for the launch of Biodiversity Week by Environment Minister John Gormley on May 22 were shocked to discover the container in flames.
Park rangers were alerted to the fire and two units of the Dublin Fire Brigade were immediately on the scene to tackle the blaze.
A spokeswoman for Fingal County Council indicated that the fire could have been started intentionally.

“Other incidents that have happened in the recent past should be noted as there may be a connection to this incident,” the spokeswoman told Northside People.
“It should also be noted that the park rangers played a vital role in their response to the incident, making a timely call to the emergency services and their submission of the report.”
The spokeswoman added that the council is currently working with the gardai in relation to this incident.
Balbriggan ward councillor Joe Corr (GP), who was at Malahide Castle for the launch of Biodiversity Week, said he was surprised when he noticed black plumes of smoke coming from the direction of the dressing rooms.
“On closer inspection you could see that the container was absolutely blazing,” Cllr Corr stated.
Cllr Corr praised the quick actions of the park rangers and the fire service in getting the blaze under control.
A spokesman at the Garda Press Office told Northside People last Friday (May 30) that the fire was still under investigation.
“It appears this container was unlocked when it was found on fire but there has been no clear evidence yet to suggest whether the fire was an accident or something more suspicious,” the spokesman said.
“There have been no arrests made in relation to the fire and our investigations are continuing.”
