esker.jpgESKER Celtic’s Under 10D team completed a remarkable season with a 1-0 victory over Marino in the Lee Kavanagh Cup Final at Home Farm FC last Sunday week, May 25.
In a season that has often been dominated by their offensive prowess, this match showcased the real strength of Esker, their defence.
Marino started brightly and drove into the Esker area on numerous occasions.
However, the quality defensive play of Harry Larkin, Padraig Sculley and Paul Rigney neutralised most attacks.
The Northsiders almost scored after 10 minutes but were denied by Esker ‘keeper Nevan Jio who made a quality save.
Jio made further saves as Marino threatened to open the scoring.
Esker stunned their opponents by absorbing great pressure and then going ahead after 20 minutes.
Jacob Breaw drove into the Marino area and fed James Linehan with a brilliant pass before the latter netted with a fine strike into the top right hand corner.
Esker controlled much of the second half and went close to adding a second in the 43rd minute through Cooper’s header, which went just wide.
The final whistle brought down the curtain on an incredible season for John Cooper’s side who managed to win all their league and cup matches, and there’s no doubt they’ll be a team to look out for in the future.
