Judo competition proves a winner

THE Secondary and Primary Dublin Schools’ Judo Championships held at St Joseph’s Boys’ National School and Pobalscoil Rosmini on the Northside featured some pulsating bouts from young novices up to the more experienced athletes.
Blackrock College finally came of age when they captured the Secondary Junior Team Championship for the first time, having missed out on reaching the final for the past two years.
In their first pool encounter against Plunket College, Blackrock overcame their opponents 4-1 while in the second match they whitewashed St Michael’s College 5-0, winning all their bouts by scoring with a special technique (Ippon).
They booked a semi-final berth against reigning champions Coolmine Community College following their 4-1 success over Hartstown Community College.
The Plunket ‘A’ team found their form by beating both St Michael’s College ‘B’ and Hartstown to reach the other semi-final against the St Michael’s College ‘A’ team who topped the other pool standings.
Blackrock didn’t have it easy in the semi-final, as their North Dublin opponents took them to the fifth and final match before they finally overcame Coolmine 3-2.
Meanwhile, in the other semi-final Plunket ‘A’ booked their place, as their form peaked to dispose of St Michael’s 4-1.
However, Blackrock kept their best till last when they introduced super sub, Joseph Lawlor, who completely outplayed his rival, Robbie Kenna, to register a win in the first match of the final. Lawlor’s excellent start inspired his colleagues who cruised to an emphatic 5-0 victory.
In the Senior Secondary category Coolmine Community College retained the title they won for the first time last year, proving too strong for their opponents around the floor.
In the Young Women’s event Castleknock Community College retained their crown with team captain Christina Kelly, Ute Greene and Danielle Mongey all winning their matches by Ippon and in capturing another title, the Northside school became the first school to win four titles in a row.
In the Primary Schools Judo Championship 30 contestants representing schools from Dublin, Meath and Cavan took part in this year’s competition.
For most players it was their first taste of competition with all students rising to the occasion, and there were some hotly contested categories in all age and weight groups.
In the Under 9 and Under 10 age group two Northside students captured gold. Maxim Tregub of St Brigid’s National School, Castleknock, won the opening group with three straight wins while Sarah O’Gara of Scoil Bhride, Coolmine, was in incredible form, winning gold before the young athlete lifted the Female Player of the Day title for a third successive year.
The Coolmine school added two bronze medals when Sarah’s sister, Zoe, won bronze in the Under 13 age and Under 45kg category followed by Lee Gibbons at heavyweight.
