Justy the car for you

Handing me the keys of a new Justy, Subaru’s Lorraine Cullen said that their new model would be ideal for first time buyers.
And at e13,995 for the standard 1.0 model it certainly is a supermini that newcomers to the market should be able to afford.
You don’t get much luxury at that price, but what you do get is a spacious four-door car which should get you in on the car ladder, a bit like the famous housing ladder.
The Subaru brand is associated with the speedy Impreza, but they have a few other models including the Forster, Legacy, Outback and the new Tribeca.
The Justy is similar to the Daihatsu Sirion and it has a very high look to it from the rear end. But that height can be useful for transporting goods. The boot is small, but by leaving down the back seats I managed to squeeze in several old household items for a visit to the South Dublin recycling centre in Ballymount.
Internally there is plenty of room for five adults, but I don’t think with five adults on board you would be able to overtake many other cars. Even with just one passenger it honestly wasn’t brilliant on the overtaking, just not enough power in the 1.0 engine.
However, I liked the radio controls, which were easy enough to use. And the cubby holes for holding pens, phones etc in the front were spacious.
One thing you will definitely do in the Justy is fasten your seat belts. You get a gentle beep for around 30 seconds then the sound gets really loud, nearly as loud as a house alarm. So you definitely will belt up.
It would be ideal as a second family car for dropping children to school, football games or music lessons. But on a long journey to Kerry, which I had to take, it tended to get a bit noisy and I really needed the radio to block out the road noise. But you won’t need to stop for petrol too often.
So overall not bad for a fiver short of e14,000. If you wish you can add some extras like alloy wheels, racing stripes and a roof spoiler, which would bring the price up to e15,995. But I think if you are a customer in this category keeping the price down will be your target. And the good news is that it will get even cheaper come July 1.
It all depends what your needs are and what your financial situation is. If you have plenty of cash you might go for a Mini, if you have a mortgage and want a new car maybe the Justy could be just the car for you. Subaru now has 14 dealers in 13 counties nationwide.
