Mayor’s death a blow to all of Lucan PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 29 May 2008
Tributes have been pouring in for the late mayor of South Dublin County Council, Billy Gogarty, who died last week.
He was the father of the Green Party TD for Dublin South West, Paul Gogarty.
Mr Gogarty senior was a representative for Lucan and a long serving member of the Green Party.
The party’s leader John Gormley expressed his sincere sympathies to Paul, his mother Mary and family.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Paul Gogarty, Billy's son and a member of our parliamentary party, and to Paul's mother Mary and their family,'' he said.
“Billy was a pillar of the community and a tireless worker. His death is a blow to the entire community of Lucan.''
Green party councillor, Tony McDermott said: “In his short time as mayor Billy's style and personality left an indelible impression and affection on all those he met.
"He brought to the council the same dedication and practical commitment that he applied so effectively for many years in his local community in Lucan. Billy was first and foremost a realist – driven by a desire to achieve the best outcomes for his community.”
Mr Gogarty was co-opted onto South Dublin County Council on October 9 last year.
While he was born in Palmerstown he had lived with his family in Lucan for 33 years.
He had a long association with the community, most notably with Lucan Sarsfields, which he served as chairperson for a number of terms.
