‘Green’ Ballymun highlighted at conference

A CONFERENCE to create a new and greener Ballymun as part of the local regeneration scheme saw locals and politicians come together earlier this month to discuss environmental initiatives.
The Greener Ballymun conference was officially launched by Minister for the Environment John Gormley at the Ballymun Civic centre, on Friday May 2.
The conference focussed on ways to ensure that the current wave of developments in Ballymun is carried out in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.
Ciaran Murray, managing director of Ballymun Regeneration Ltd, the company set up by Dublin City Council to implement the regeneration of Ballymun, said the conference will help ensure Ballymun stays at the forefront of innovation.
“Now that the physical infrastructure is well under way the regeneration programme is concentrating on making Ballymun a successful town with employment opportunities, strong communities and a better environment for everyone,” he stated.
“The ‘Greener Ballymun’ conference showcases some of the exciting environmental projects taking place in Ballymun which are contributing towards building a vibrant urban community.
"Ballymun aspires to be one of the greenest towns in Ireland, whether in building design, energy conservation or landscaping programmes.”
The regeneration programme is now in its tenth year and so far over 1,300 families have moved from the flats and are living in new homes while over 1,000 new private, affordable, voluntary and co-op homes have been built in the area.
The conference featured a unique fashion show in which designs made from 100 per cent recycled materials were on display.
The ‘Rediscovery Fashion’ collection, presented by TV personality, Caroline Morahan, featured designs by some of Ireland’s newest designers.
Sarah Miller, Environmental Manager, BRL explained how the Rediscovery centre hopes to produce similar work.
"The Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun will present a new generation of recycling facilities demonstrating best practice in waste reuse, recycling and recovery,” Sarah explained.
“A number of exciting projects have been developed in anticipation of the centre being built including a very successful furniture recovery project and paints recycling programme. The fashion project is our latest pilot aimed at changing the way people think about waste.
“The venture is being designed to the highest building standards exceeding the building regulations and demonstrating best practice in all aspects even generating its own electricity on site.”
Keynote speaker at the conference was well known architect, Duncan Stewart, who explained the major role buildings have to play in tackling climate change alongside sustainable communities.
