All roads lead to Skerries

MOTORCYCLING enthusiasts will head for north county Dublin in their droves in early July for one of the biggest road races in Ireland.
It has been announced that this year’s Skerries 100 will take place on July 4 and 5, with record numbers expected to attend the anniversary race.
Held annually in the seaside town for the last 63 years, this year’s race also marks the 21st anniversary of the involvement of the Loughshinny Motorcycle Supporters’ Club in the event.
The 11 races over the two days will draw competitor teams from across Ireland and beyond, and this anniversary year, is expected to attract a record number of supporters, well up on the 15,000 who turned out in 2007.
The highlight race, the Grand Final, will see racers compete for a prize fund of over e6,000 with a first prize of e2,500 for the winner.
In total, the club will present e25,000 in prizes over the 11 races.
Having its roots in the original Dublin 100 Road Race held annually from 1931 up to WWII in the Phoenix Park, Skerries was chosen in 1945 as a suitable alternative for the revived event when new restrictions on the park prevented the race from being staged there.
With the help of the Skerries Development Association, several course routes were investigated before the inaugural Skerries 100 was run over a seven-mile course on July 6, 1946.
Since that date, the race has grown to encompass varying class sizes of bike.
The Loughshinny Motorcycle Supporters’ Club became involved in backing and organising the event in 1986, organising it in parallel with their own annual Killalane race (since 1984) (September 13 and 14).
Loughshinny remains the only Irish club to offer two annual road races.
The official race launch took place at Skerries Golf Club last Thursday.
