Great season for volleyball club

A NORTH Dublin volleyball club brought the curtain down on a trophy-laden awards night recently.
Aer Lingus Volleyball Club honoured its players at the ceremony in ALSAA, with a number of trophies on display adding to the occasion.
The club, which celebrates its 25th anniversary next year, has won the Premier Ladies’ League, came 1st and 2nd place in the Premier Men’s League and were winners of the Men’s Senior Cup.
It was a fantastic achievement for the club and this brings to 34 the number of national titles won by Aer Lingus Volleyball Club since its foundation by Conor Keeling and Pat Lynch in 1984.
Aer Lingus Jets won the Premier Men’s League by beating Aer Lingus 1 in a nail-biting and exciting match on April 20 at ALSAA.
Jets needed to win three sets to nil to take the league title. They stormed into the match taking the first set, 25-19. However, Aer Lingus 1 were ahead in the second set and with the pressure mounting, Jets clawed their way from behind to take the set 25-23.
Jets went on to take the third set, 25-19, and the Premier League title for the second consecutive year.
On the day, Jets were the better team with Mark Nolan, Conor Keeling, Jeff King and Kieran Moran outstanding throughout.
On April 26, Aer Lingus 1 were determined not to falter again in the All-Ireland Men’s Senior Cup Final against archrivals Trinity College Dublin.
TCD started the stronger and stormed ahead by two sets to nil. Aer Lingus 1 were now in big trouble as they needed to win the remaining three sets to take the cup.
In the third set, both teams were neck and neck with Aer Lingus 1 coming from behind to win 25-23.
The match was now on, with Aer Lingus 1 having regained their fire and confidence, taking control of the fourth set to win 25-20.
Aer Lingus 1 took control early on in the deciding set and went into a six-point lead. However, TCD clawed it back to within two points and the large crowd were holding its breath.
Aer Lingus 1 dug deep and went on to win 15-11 in the final set.
A fine team performance won it on the day with Matthew Carroll, Arthur Szpak and Paddy Flynn excellent throughout.
Pat Hickey, chairman of the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI), presented the cup to jubilant captain Carlos Gil.
Meanwhile, at the Volleyball Association of Ireland (VAI) Presentation and Dinner Awards last month, Aer Lingus swept the boards, winning two Premier League titles and a second place in the League and the Senior Men’s Cup.
To top all of that, the club won five out of the possible 12 All-Star awards that are awarded to the best players in the country as selected by their fellow volleyball players.
The five Aer Lingus All Stars were Mark Nolan, Kieran Moran, Enrico Perla, Sinead Connor and Bea Gerevich.
Aer Lingus Volleyball Club boasts three men’s teams and three ladies’ teams and they train at ALSAA on Tuesdays and Fridays. New players are welcome.
