Celebrating a ‘Fairview’ years in football

If a week is a long time in politics, then 50 years in football must be an eternity.
Yet there are those who have been involved with a North Dublin football club right from its very beginning in 1958 through to this present day.
Fairview CY is celebrating its golden jubilee this year and will be hoping that all those who have made the club's past 50 years a success will be present to share in the special occasion.
With two men's teams playing in the Leinster Senior League (LSL), Fairview CY has notched up a vast number of achievements over the past half-century and the club's first team is now well established in the senior intermediate ranks of the LSL.
The jubilee marks a very special year for club stalwart Terry Mahon in particular, who was the captain of the Fairview CY team that took to the pitch for the club's first ever match back in 1958.

Now in his 70s, Terry still makes it down to watch his beloved local team play their home games and such loyalty is a strong feature at Fairview CY.
Committee member Brian O'Malley told Dublin People Sport that a core group of lads of all ages have remained committed to the club for many years.
"It can be difficult at times to keep that identity about a club nowadays with many people moving out of their area, but we have a golf society of 45 to 50 fellas who meet up regularly and are nearly all ex-Fairview CY players,” Brian said.
"We have already had a couple of nights to celebrate our jubilee year which attracted a few hundred people down to our sports hall, so hopefully all the effort we are making through the year will be worth it.”
On the pitch, Brian said it was a matter of consolidation for the two Fairview CY teams this year.
"The two teams have done okay over the season with the first team holding their own in the LSL Senior 1B division,” he stated.
"It hasn't been one our best years in that respect, when you consider that just a few years back the first team won a treble of their league and two cups, but we have done well enough.”
A number of members of the club will be honoured for their great service to Fairview CY down through the years.
Brian himself managed to play in four different decades for the club - a feat he is proud of.
"There are a few lads like myself who managed to play in the 70s, 80s, 90s and in the present decade which is a pretty good achievement," he added.
"This club has always been able to attract players to stay for quite some time and even those who went off for a year or two would find themselves back with us at some stage.”
With the summer months ahead to rest up, the two Fairview CY teams will be looking forward to the start of the next season, when they will have the opportunity to push the club forward for its next 50 years.
