Anger over messy green bin collection

A household waste collector has promised to clean up its act after it was slammed for making a mess of a Northside estate recently.
Residents in Grattan Lodge, Donaghmede, expressed anger at the state their area was left in after an early morning collection of green bins by recycling company Oxigen.
Residents complained that paper, cardboard and beer cans were left strewn around the estate after a collection by Oxigen at 1.20am on Wednesday, May 7.
Oxigen is subcontracted by Dublin City Council to collect green bins from all households in its administrative area.
However, local councillor Tom Brabazon (FF), a resident of Grattan Lodge, told Northside People he was extremely annoyed by the incident.
Cllr Brabazon, who is also a member of the Grattan Lodge Residents’ Association, said such incidences were hampering local efforts to keep the area looking good.
“It looked as if there had been total mayhem in the estate with rubbish everywhere,” Cllr Brabazon said.
“This is particularly annoying as our residents’ committee is doing its best to maintain the estate with a view to competing in the Tidy Districts competition.”
Cllr Brabazon said residents were forced to clean up the mess themselves.

“It is a pity because Dublin City Council has been very good to our committee by providing bags, gloves and litter pickers and are supportive of the efforts being made by us.
“But this latest incident with Oxigen was unacceptable.”
A spokeswoman for Dublin City Council told Northside People that a major sweep and clean up of each area takes place on the same day as the bins are collected.
“This is to clean up any of the paper or cardboard which may have fallen from the bins,” she said.
However, Cllr Brabazon said this sweeping operation was not always thorough.
Meanwhile, in correspondence with Dublin City Council, a spokesperson for Oxigen said they were aware of the incident at Grattan Lodge.
“I have directed that on no account are bins to be collected in the manner described and I have requested that the line manager meets with the crew as a matter of urgency to establish precisely what happened and to ensure it does not repeat itself again,” the spokesperson said.
