New Beaumont hospital splits opinion PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 May 2008
The construction of a controversial private hospital on the grounds of Beaumont Hospital is expected to create over 1,000 new jobs for the area.
When fully operational, the new co-located hospital will directly employ up to 504 staff, with additional indirect employment of approximately 776 people.
Beaumont Hospital and Beacon Medical Group (BMG) recently announced that planning permission has been received for the new facility which will represent an investment of e297 million by BMG.
The hi-tech, state-of-the-art hospital will comprise 170 single rooms, six operating theatres, ambulatory surgery and full diagnostics incorporating e26.4 million worth of new generation equipment.
It is expected that the hospital will be fully operational within 30 months, once construction on it begins.
The development of the private hospital at Beaumont has polarised opinion on the Northside.
Artane ward councillor Larry O’Toole (SF) has slammed the co-location policy and has called on the Government to concentrate its efforts on better funding of the public health system.
Cllr O’Toole said he was also extremely angry at the fact that the new private hospital at Beaumont will be built on lands that had initially been earmarked for a much-needed psychiatric unit.
Beaumont Hospital confirmed this but stated that a new site would be provided for the psychiatric unit.
However, Dublin North Central TD Finian McGrath (Ind) has warmly welcomed the new private hospital plan, which he believed would be of great benefit to the area.
Deputy McGrath said that as the private hospital will be leasing the land from Beaumont Hospital, while also sharing vital new high-tech equipment, it would be a “win-win” situation for the Northside.
