MEMBERS of the Stardust Victims’ Committee met with representatives of the Archbishop of Dublin last Thursday (May 8) in an effort to bring forward a new inquiry into the horrific fire tragedy. The victims’ committee is hoping that Archbishop Diarmuid Martin can put pressure on the Government to immediately appoint someone new to oversee an independent review of its calls for a new inquiry. The independent review came to a halt in March, after it emerged that the Senior Counsel John Gallagher, who had been appointed to oversee the review, had been a legal representative for gardai at the time of the original inquests into the fire in 1981. Speaking to Northside People, Antoinette Keegan of the Stardust Victims’ Committee, said they were angry and appalled by this setback. “We are in a deadlock at the moment and we want the Government to act immediately to get this review underway,” she stated. Ms Keegan said the meeting with the Archbishop’s representatives had been very positive. “There is a genuine concern from the Archbishop in relation to our case and he believes a new inquiry is essential on humanitarian grounds,” she said. The committee is hopeful that a new eminent legal person will be put in place to oversee the review very soon. “The Government has promised to have names in front of us by this week and one of those is expected to be appointed within the next two weeks,” Ms Keegan added. “It’s important that we get closure into all of this, but to get closure we need the truth. “The families do not want to be trapped into this nightmare of 1981 forever and while we will never forget what happened, closure can at least help us to move on.” |
