Drugs task force produces Dun Laoghaire directory

A local drugs taskforce in South County Dublin has now made it easier for drug users to gain access to a range of different services to help them improve their lives.
The Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Local Drugs Task Force launched its ‘Community Services Directory’ alongside a newly developed website at the Haniel House Drugs Project in Sandyford.
The lack of information about community services was identified by the task force to be a barrier to people accessing essential services, in particular, those that relate to addiction and family support.
The directory has eight categories, which include: Community & Childcare; Drug & Alcohol Services; Education & Employment; Housing; Health Services and many more. This user friendly booklet is available free of charge to local people, agency workers, drug users and professionals who want to find out more about services in their area.
At the recent launch the drugs task force also unveiled its newly developed website which allows people to access the directory online at www.dlrdrugtaskforce.ie
Lots of useful information is available on the website, including some facts about drugs, reports into various aspects of drug use in Ireland and abroad and useful links to other drug related web-sites.
“Access to vital information and services is hugely important for those who have been negatively affected by addiction,” according to Eamonn Gillen who works for the local drugs task force. “Local organisations can help people who are in distress as a result of drug and alcohol abuse.
“By publishing a directory and through the launch of our website we hope to fill a gap in the provision of services to local people.”
The Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Local Drug Task Force was set up in 1997 to enable the statutory and voluntary services in the area to come together with the community to tackle the problems caused by drug misuse.
In common with the other local drugs task forces (LDTFs), the Dun Laoghaire branch tries to ensure that the National Drugs Strategy becomes a reality in the borough.
The organisation acts on behalf of communities and for service users on important issues pertaining to drug misuse. They also look at services to people in need under the headings or “pillars” of the strategy.
