saved.jpgA POPULAR Northside boxing club that came close to closing down has received a last minute reprieve.
As reported in Northside People last week, Baldoyle Boxing Club feared it would have to close down due to the fact it could not make full use of its boxing ring.
However, thanks to the generosity of a local publican, the successful club has been offered new training premises and will have its boxers back in the ring by August.
Christy Taylor, owner of the Racecourse Inn in Baldoyle, has decided to clear out an upstairs snooker room at the pub to make way for the boxing club’s ring.
Ned Hendricks, head coach of Baldoyle Boxing Club, told Northside People he was delighted with the news.
“It is a very generous offer by Mr Taylor to offer us his premises and our boxers are looking forward to being able to continue their training,” Mr Hendricks said.

“But we are still anxious to meet with Fingal County Council to discuss the possibility of obtaining a new premises for ourselves in the long-term.”
Mr Hendricks said the club has eyed some spare land to the rear of Baldoyle Community Hall where he feels the council could develop new premises.
“That is certainly one of the ideas we will be mentioning to the council when we have a meeting with them, but we would be equally happy to take another existing premises if the council was willing to offer one.”
Until the Racecourse Inn premises becomes available in August, six of the top boxers at the club will continue to train at a nearby martial arts club.
SBG Northside, a mixed martial arts club situated in Baldoyle Industrial Estate, will accommodate the boxers over the coming months to help them keep in shape.
Darren Burke, a Community Garda in Baldoyle who helped to facilitate the boxing club’s new move, said he was thrilled at the effort made to keep the club afloat.
“Mr Taylor of the Racecourse Inn has agreed to remove 12 full-size snooker tables from an upstairs room and it will be a perfect premises for the boxing club,” Garda Burke stated.
“He is only too happy to help, as are Richie Moore and Andy Ryan of SBG Northside, because it would have been a terrible shame to see such a good club having to close down.
“Many people, including local woman Helen Grimes, deserve praise for doing what they could to keep the club going.”
