PLANS for a controversial new road on the Northside have been given the go-ahead after local councillors voted in favour of a draft variation to the Dublin City Development Plan. At a special meeting of Dublin City Council, councillors voted overwhelmingly in favour of the variation, which will see changes made to the busy Malahide Road. The plans will also see a new road built south and parallel to the Mayne River close to the Northern Cross Town Centre. The news will come as a blow to residents in the area who feared the new road could hamper the council’s plans to develop a new park near to Northern Cross. However, Donaghmede ward councillor, Sean Kenny (Lab), said he was pleased the plan was passed. He said the need for this route was originally identified as part of the development of the Dublin City North Fringe area. “This area will eventually have a population of over 40,000 people and another 30,000 people are employed in the region around Dublin Airport,” Cllr Kenny stated. “There is a critical need for improved road and public transport access between the two centres.” Cllr Kenny said it had been a feature of the development of the North Fringe that the provision of transport infrastructure has lagged behind residential and commercial building development. “Anyone who is familiar with the Belmayne/Clongriffin area will be aware of the traffic congestion on the existing road network,” he added. “The need for this relief road is of vital importance. “This route will connect with new roads planned in the Fingal area which will allow traffic from the north east of the city to access the M1 and Dublin Airport without having to use the heavily congested N32/M50 interchange which is already under severe pressure.” Plans for the new road will now be put through a stringent Strategic Environment Assessment (SEA) before it will progress any further. |
