Council reports on Darndale development PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 08 May 2008
DUBLIN City Council has reported to local public representatives on the proposed redevelopment of a public open space on the Northside.
The open space site in the centre of Darndale, part of which until recently accommodated the former Darndale Shopping Centre, is referred to as the ‘Spine’ site and was the centre of anti-social activity and in a bad condition.
It has been recommended for redevelopment as affordable housing with some accommodation for older persons’ housing.
The new houses will be similar in design and height to existing houses and the design will not include through traffic routes. All existing roads adjoining the site will also become cul-de-sacs.
An architect was appointed to provide a design for the development of affordable housing units on the site and it was then expanded to include the redevelopment of part of Buttercup.
Key elements of the plan include 53 affordable housing units, seven units for senior citizens and 37 social housing units.
Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Anne Carter, said it was critical that the North West corner of Buttercup Estate, which has long required a fundamental redesign, is now at last being included in this project.
According to Dublin North East Tommy Broughan (Lab) agreement in principle has been received from the Department of the Environment subject to more detailed designs and costings being submitted prior to progressing to the pre planning public consultation and planning stage.
“I have also learned that subject to the receipt of formal approval from the Department of the Environment, and the granting of planning permission and agreement with owner occupiers, this project will progress to tender stage,” stated Deputy Broughan.
“I welcome the report. However, it is very disappointing that the city council does not believe that work will commence on this development until mid 2009 at the earliest.”
