| Sailors prepare for World Championships |

 FOUR South Dublin sailors have been named on the Irish team that will be competing at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Denmark in July.The Irish Sailing Association (ISA) has picked a strong team of six sailors, including Alyson Rumball, Niamh O'Connell, Ed Butler and Daniel McCarthy, who are all from Dun Laoghaire. Ben Lynch (Carlow), a member of Howth Yacht Club, and Tiffany Brien (Belfast) are the other two squad members who will be hoping to make a good account of themselves against some of the best young sailors in the world. The Dun Laoghaire duo Alyson Rumball (18) and Niamh O'Connell (15) have made the transition from the 420 category to the 29er to specifically qualify and be a competitive team at the Youth Worlds this year. With club coaching support from the Royal St George Yacht Club, combined with logistical and funding support from the Irish Sports Council and the ISA Academy, the girls have worked hard on their programme to top the bill for selection. The girls have also kept in top shape with strength and conditioning training at Riverview Sports Club in Dublin. Also hailing from Dun Laoghaire, Ed Butler and Daniel McCarthy got together at the end of the 2007 season to plan forward and put together a professional programme of sailing, physical training and race training in preparation for this big event. Ed and Daniel have also benefited from Royal St George, ISC and ISA Academy support to put their programme together. The boys train in the gym with Sportsmed Ireland and have long-term Olympic ambitions in the 49er Skiff class. Rory Fitzpatrick, ISA youth and development manager, said that for the first time in at least four years Ireland would have a full complement of sailors competing in the Youth Worlds. "It is a testament to the success of our revamped junior and youth programmes that we can send six sailors to Denmark,” Mr Fitzpatrick said. |
