 The United Shotokan Karate Federations (USKF) 2008 National Championships took place at Blanchardstown IT on April 20.The competition was well supported with competitors travelling from as far as Northern Ireland to take part. Santry Shotokan Karate Club was represented by a selection of its members ranging in ages and grades. Club instructor Bernard Gaffney said he was more than impressed with the club’s performances on the day. “We had a very positive and competitive attitude from the students that took part,” he said. “Win or lose, every one of them gave their opponents a good run for their money.” The big success for the Santry club came courtesy of Alan McCann (17). He became national champion on three fronts - senior male kata (brown-black belt), 16-17 years male (brown to black belt) and kumite (sparring), senior male team kumite event. Alan had to settle for second place in the senior male (brown-black belt) kumite after just missing out on the final score to one of his teammates in the final of that event. However, his efforts didn't go unnoticed as he was given the overall Best Male competitor award. In other events, 14-year-old Joey Farrell took third in the 12-15 years mixed kata and second in the boys’ kumite, while seven-year-old Ben Stobie also got a third place medal, this time in the three-step sparring event. Sensei Gaffney said: “It’s looking good for the club with some promising talent coming through the grades at present.” Meanwhile, the Santry club welcomes new memberships, and anyone interested can get information on all the clubs within the USKF at www.uskf.org |
