CIARAN McDonnell was the hero for Ardscoil La Salle, Raheny, when his winning penalty secured the FAI Schools/Umbro Leinster Junior Cup Final following a tense shootout against gallant Drimnagh Castle. The decider, played at Oscar Traynor Road, Coolock, recently turned out to be an evenly contested affair with both sides giving their all and finishing level, 1-1, at the end of extra time. Daniel Nugent opened the scoring for the Northside school with a sweet strike into the bottom corner. A few minutes before half-time, Dan McGuinness equalised for Drimnagh Castle with a shot from inside the box. Raheny had one or two chances before that, with the in form Nugent coming close on two occasions. At the other end, Drimnagh were shut out a couple of times by the Raheny defence that included star performers in Dano Byrne and Killian Jenkinson. There was also confident goalkeeping displayed by Anthony Brady who made two fantastic saves in the opening half. The second half was as competitive with a right battle for possession taking place in the middle of the park between Matthew Jackson, Carl Grehen and Aaron Humphries (Ardscoil) and Craig Walsh and Roberto Lopez (Drimnagh Castle). Ardscoil skipper Dan Lodge led by example and as always, worked hard up front and caused a lot of problems for the South Dublin school’s defence. The Raheny back four kept things tight at the other end with Ricky Shevlin making a heroic clearance off the line in the last few minutes following another great save from Anthony Brady. Ciaran McDonnell was at his best again to keep everything sound at left full. In extra time, Luke Carter came on to add stamina to Ardscoil. His powerful runs down the left hand side caused Drimnagh Castle a number of problems. A winning goal couldn’t be found in extra time and the game had to be settled on penalties. Ciaran McDonnell scored the winning penalty for Ardscoil.
