SOME of the top names in the hockey world will descend on Dublin again this June for another impressive line up at the Setanta Sports Trophy. The National Hockey Stadium in UCD will play host to the prestigious event, which will see both the Irish senior men’s, and women's teams take on top class hockey nations. In the men’s Setanta Sports Trophy, Ireland will compete with Great Britain, Pakistan and Canada, who have all qualified for the Olympics. In the women’s competition, Ireland will do battle with current Olympic Champions Germany, as well as Great Britain and South Africa. Both the men and women’s competitions will be held simultaneously, providing an exciting festival of high-level competition from June 11-15. The Setanta Sports Trophy provides Ireland with the biggest hockey international event of the year, giving the public their only chance to see these nations in action before they head off to Beijing this August to compete in the Olympics. Dave Passmore, the Irish Hockey Association's Director of High Performance, said the ability to attract top quality opposition to this event demonstrates the progress made by our national teams. "It is essential that our players are exposed to high quality tournament hockey which is so vital in developing players and enabling them to develop the skills required to achieve at the highest level,” Mr Passmore stated. Setanta Sports, which provides a huge amount of television coverage to hockey, from schools right up to the top international level, has committed once again to providing full coverage of the event. Niall Cogley, chief executive of Setanta Sports Ireland, said the broadcaster was delighted to be involved in the event. "We look forward to working with the Irish Hockey Association on the Setanta Sports Trophy and other events over the coming months, as both Setanta and the sport of hockey continues to grow,” Mr Cogley stated.
