Badminton players prepare for tournament

FIVE Northsiders have been called up for international duty for a badminton tournament that will take place next month.
Breda Connolly (Swords), Jean Denihan (Baldoyle), Sheila O’Flanagan (Clontarf), Kevin McGrath (Portmarnock) and Conor Doyle (Malahide) have been selected for the Ireland team that will take on Wales and Scotland in the Triangular Veterans’ Internationals at the Baldoyle Badminton Centre on Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4.
In the men’s events this season Kevin McGrath has won two Ulster Opens, a Leinster Open and Irish Men’s Doubles titles in the 55 plus category and wins his fifth international cap.
Conor Doyle has also won several titles this season including an Irish Men’s Singles title, Ulster Open Men’s, Leinster mixed doubles titles and reached the semi finals of the prestigious Scottish International Championships Men’s doubles, all at 45 plus level. Both men play for Raheny Badminton Club.
On the ladies’ side, Jean Denihan has also excelled this season and apart from winning the Leinster mixed titles was unlucky not to win with her partner Conor Doyle in the 45 plus age group mixed doubles in the Ulster Open and Irish tournaments.
Sheila O’Flanagan, the famous author, is re-selected after her strong performances during the year.
Breda Connolly has also been re-selected at international level, especially after her display against England last October.
The Triangular Internationals are being sponsored by Turkington Windows.
Scotland is sending 37 players and Wales are fielding 28. The following are the age groups taking part in the matches: 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+, 60+.

The teams are playing for the Chick Doyle Perpetual Trophy. The trophy was presented by the Doyle family three years ago to mark the 50th anniversary of Conor’s father, Chick, winning the Irish, Scottish and Welsh Open Singles.
Doyle had a glittering badminton career, reaching a World ranking of number 5 in men’s singles and winning both Ulster Open singles and Irish singles titles eight times during the 1950s.
Doyle was a legend of the famous ‘Golden Age’ of Irish badminton in the 1950s and 1960s and played with other famous names like Frank Peard, JJ Fitzgibbon, Des Lacy, Noel Henderson, Ken Carlisle, Yvonne Kelly, Mary Bryan, Jean Lawless and of course the then six times World Champion Sue Peard nee Devlin.
