Bomb alert causes panic in Cabra

A NORTHSIDE community had a lucky escape last week when a local family spotted a pipe bomb planted under a vehicle in their driveway.
Residents of Broombridge Road, Cabra, were hastily evacuated by emergency services who responded to the alert at around 10.40pm last Tuesday (April 15).
Adults and children, many of whom were dressed in pyjamas and night-gowns, waited patiently in the bitter cold for almost three hours before the area was declared safe.
The Army Bomb Disposal Unit examined the scene before deciding to carry out a controlled explosion on the device, which was described as a “viable nail pipe bomb”.
The remains of the bomb, the car involved and other items found at the scene were taken to McKee barracks for further examination.
A local described the scene on the night as “bizarre”.
“There were kids who were just dressed in their pyjamas standing in the freezing cold until about 1.30am,” he told Northside People.
“No one knew what was going on. The first I knew of anything was when I saw all the emergency and army vehicles with their lights on outside the house.
“I’m living in the area two years and I’ve never heard of anything like this happening before.”
According to local councillor Seamus McGrattan (SF), a young child discovered the bomb under the car.
“I’ve heard that a young child was the first to see it,” he told Northside People.
“Two people were seen putting it under the jeep.
“It was a miracle that it didn’t go off before the bomb disposal unit got to the scene.”
Cllr McGrattan said that many “good and decent families” were very distressed by the incident.
“Broombridge Road is a quiet neighbourhood which is why people were very concerned that something so sinister could happen.
“I hope this is very much an isolated incident.”
Gardai are investigating the incident but no arrests have been made.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday (April 16), another suspect device was discovered at around 7am at a pedestrian entrance to Richmond Courthouse on North Brunswick Street.
Traffic was diverted from the area while the Defence Forces examined the device. However, after detailed examination the bomb disposal team declared the device an “elaborate hoax” and gave the area the all clear.
It’s the second time this year that a hoax device has been found outside the courts on North Brunswick Street.
In January, bomb disposal experts were called in to examine a suspect device which was also found to be a hoax.
