Historic house set to be protected structure

DUBLIN City Council is set to place a house on Upper Drumcondra Road which played a pivotal role in the War Of Independence on its record of protected structures.
During the war in 1920, IRA volunteers Dan Breen and Sean Tracey used Number 37, also known as ‘Fernside House’, as a safe house. The building was raided on the night of October 11, 1920 by the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC).
After a vicious gun battle in which a number of members of the RIC were killed, Breen and Tracey escaped by jumping out the first floor window through a conservatory.
The house’s owner, Professor Carolan, was found murdered later that night outside the room in which the two Irish Volunteers had stayed.
Breen and Tracey were significant figures in the War of Independence as they were part of a group of nine IRA volunteers who ambushed and shot dead two members of the RIC in Tipperary on January 21, 1919. Their actions played a significant role in igniting the Irish War of Independence.
The incident at Fernside House is widely documented and an account of the event is included in Dan Breen’s autobiography ‘My Fight for Irish Freedom’.
According to Patricia Hyde, senior planner with Dublin City Council, the building comprises of a two-storey, two-bay, red brick Victorian house.
“The house is likely to have been constructed between 1890 and 1910 and the interior plan form has changed little since it was constructed,” said Ms Hyde.
“The layout of the front rooms, including the main reception rooms, hall, stairs and master bedroom is unaltered and the interior retains a substantial amount of its original fabric and detailing.”
In a report to city councillors earlier this month Ms Hyde said the house is considered to be of architectural and historical value. She recommended that it be proposed for inclusion in the record of protected structures.
