OVER 600 students from Santa Sabina Secondary School, Sutton, lined the streets to pay their respects at the funeral of former President of Ireland, Dr John Hillery, last Wednesday. Dr Hillery was laid to rest at St Fintan’s Cemetery, Sutton, beside his daughter Vivienne, who died as a teenager. Principal of Santa Sabina, Catherine Cavanagh, said she was extremely proud of her pupils’ show of respect for Ireland’s sixth President, who lived close to the school on Greenfields Road. “Patrick was a neighbour and we wanted to pay our respect,” Ms Cavanagh told Northside People. “It was not just respect for him, but also his wife and son, and to show them that we were with them on their journey to the graveyard.” The school held a minute’s silence, as well as saying a prayer before lining the street as the cortege passed. “Dr Hillery was a person who did a lot for schools when he was Minister for Education, as well as helping to bring about equal pay for women,” added Ms Cavanagh. “We felt it was important to show support for his work and his family. Support is very important at times like this.” Gardai and passing dignitaries complimented the Santa Sabina girls for their exceptional show of respect. The chief mourners were Dr Hillery’s widow, Maeve, his son, Dr John Hillery Junior, and his wife, Carolyn, along with their children. There were graveside orations from President Mary McAleese, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Tanaiste Brian Cowen. |
