Graffiti funding welcomed on the Northside PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 April 2008
THE Government’s announcement that it is to splash out e3.7 million during 2008 to combat the scourge of graffiti has been well received on the Northside.
Under the new Community Graffiti Reduction Programme, a broad approach is being taken to tackle graffiti.
Funding will be available for a wide range of initiatives to assist local communities to remove graffiti and to carry out activities that can assist in the long-term reduction in incidences of graffiti in their areas.
Minister for Justice, Brian Lenihan, and Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, launched the programme.
Minister Lenihan said the scheme was structured in such a way that it will facilitate communities taking the broadest approach to tackling graffiti in their area in the way they feel will work best.
“Pobal is best placed to administer the scheme as is has demonstrated a high degree of commitment to supporting communities in their work to overcome disadvantage, and to ensuring that communities get best value from the funding available to them,” stated Minister Lenihan.
Minister Gormley welcomed the new cross-departmental initiative.
“I am fully aware of the major blight on communities that graffiti vandals cause,” said Minister Gormley.
“I would encourage local groups to apply for funding under this new programme which seeks to deal with graffiti both in the short-term through cleansing and support for businesses, and in the long-term by changing people’s behaviour through education and raising awareness.”
Dublin North East Senator, Martin Brady (FF), has urged the local community to apply for funding as soon as possible.
“This funding will assist communities in a range of activities and supports encompassing graffiti removal, preventative anti-graffiti measures and educational initiatives,” said Senator Brady.
Malahide ward councillor Robbie Kelly (GP) said this kind of community support was needed to tackle the graffiti problem.
"Graffiti is a major issue in every community,” stated Cllr Kelly.
“This initiative gives another significant boost to the effort in combating the problem.
“Fingal County Council has a dedicated team of graffiti removers, community gardaí have caught several offenders and communities are alert to the problem.”
Cllr Kelly said the additional funding was most welcome at this point in time.
“These grants will empower local groups to take the action that is most appropriate in their area,” he added.
