| Art students get into the picture for cancer society |

 Around e1,600 has been raised for the Irish Cancer Society at an auction held by students at the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology.The event started out as a class project for 13 Business & Arts Management students who saw an ideal opportunity to raise money for charity, and ended in an exciting auction of photography held at The James Joyce Centre in Dublin. The students worked with four of their colleagues attending a photography course at their college to produce 20 pictures based on various dance forms, from breakdance to ballet. These were exhibited and auctioned on April 10 at the Dance for Art, Dance for Life event. The IADT students realised from the beginning that they wanted to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society. Sandra Houlihan, Business & Arts Management student, said: “We know that so many people are affected by cancer. Everyone in the group would know someone that has been affected by cancer, so I suppose it’s more personal then. “It gives you more of a sense of achievement when you do something like that and it makes people more motivated, when you know that you’re doing it for a cause and not just for yourself.” Months of hard work came to fruition on the night, with around 120 people turning up to view the photographs on display and take part in the auction. Claire O’Neill, Business & Arts Management student, added: “Everyone was excited; the dancers who were there to see their photos and the photographers when their photos sold.” Kevin Delaney, community fundraiser at the Irish Cancer Society, who attended the auction, described it as a great event at a fabulous venue, with fantastic photography, a big crowd and “so much energy”. He said of the huge effort put in by the students: “It helped us see that they’re really behind what we’re doing and that we’re getting the message across that working with us is a really positive thing to get involved in.” As a charity, the Irish Cancer Society relies on volunteer efforts to fund its work, which includes research, advocacy, night nursing and helplines. Of the total taken at the auction, Kevin declared: “For one night that’s just an absolutely amazing amount for them to raise.” Fifteen of the 20 pictures were sold on the night, with the highest selling piece a hip-hop shot by photography student Claire Weir. The Business & Arts Management students aim to raise even more money for the Irish Cancer Society from the sale of the remaining pictures. |
