A feat to Crowe about

IF you play for Bohemians and you’re looking to break a record, there’s no better time to do it than in a match against arch rivals Shamrock Rovers.
That’s exactly what happened recently when Phibsboro’s finest defeated the Hoops 1-0 at Tolka Park.
More significantly though, the goal came courtesy of ace poacher Glen Crowe who eclipsed the record of 120 career goals set by former Dalymount legend, Turlough O’Connor.
O'Connor hung up his boots as a Bohs player in 1979 but returned to manage the Gypsies for a spell in the 1990s. His exploits on the field as a player left a lasting legacy.
The Irish international finished his playing career as top goalscorer in the history of the club with a total of 120 career goals.
His goals helped Bohs to secure two titles, an FAI Cup and numerous other pieces of silverware in a golden period for the club after its amateur status was abandoned.
Since then Bohemians have had some charismatic strikers like Jackie Jameson and Derek Swan, but none threatened to de-throne Turlough from his lofty position as the most prolific striker to wear the famous red and black.

That is until Roddy Collins signed a young striker for the start of the 1999/2000 season.
Bohs had just avoided relegation the previous year and a flame haired 21-year-old was brought in from Plymouth Argyle to solve the team’s troubles in front of goal.
His name was Glen Crowe. At first the Blanchardstown native was slow to get going and there were mixed opinions of this enigmatic striker. Gradually though, Glen got into his stride and began hitting the net with great regularity.
His pace and strength were obvious but a deeper analysis of his play showed a keen football intelligence and excellent reading of the play.
The following season, Bohemians clinched the league title by leapfrogging Shelbourne on the final day.
Bohs strolled to a 5-0 victory away to Kilkenny City while Shelbourne lost at home to Cork City.
Glen scored a hat-trick that day to finish the league campaign with 25 goals, a Premier Division record. His goals were vital again in 2003 when another league pennant was secured.
Glen said he was delighted to break the club’s goalscoring record.
"It feels great,” he stated.
“It's a milestone that I am delighted to reach. I did not know that I had broken the record until after the game and that was probably a good thing." Turlough O'Connor was, as always, poised when news that his record had been surpassed filtered through.
The former goal poacher said he was very pleased that the record was broken because it brought his own exploits to people's attention.
“When Glen left for Shels, I did not think the record would go so soon but once he re-signed for Bohs, I knew that he would break it,” stated Turlough.
“I just didn't expect that time to arrive so quickly.
"At Bohs, Glen has a number of good years ahead of him so he should add a few more goals to the total.”
One of the greatest honours that can be achieved in the game is an international cap.
When the ginger magician was making a name for himself domestically, then caretaker manager of the Republic of Ireland, Don Givens, took notice.
Glen made his international debut in Ireland's friendly fixture against Greece in Athens in November 2002.
His selection saw SKY News among others descend on Dalymount Park to find out who this non-UK based player was.
While Glen did not get on the scoresheet that night he acquitted himself very well. He won one other cap when coming on as a sub against Norway in April 2003.
Glen was the first home-based player since Pat Byrne 16 years before, to be capped while playing in the League of Ireland.
In that time only one other player has managed the same feat, Jason Byrne, who currently partners Glen up front for the Gypsies.
Glen departed Dalymount for Shelbourne for the 2005 season and spent two years at Tolka Park before returning to Dalymount in 2007 as a league champion.
Inevitably, he started where he had left off and was the club's top scorer again last season.
Early strikes this term against Sligo and Finn Harps saw him equal Turlough’s record but it was to be in the big Dublin derby against the Hoops where Glen edged ahead of the Athlone native's record with a typical predatory strike.
While Glen is now a part of Bohemian FC’s folklore, there are undoubtedly more goals and magic moments to come.
Glen and Jason played together at Shelbourne with great success and though Jason is still settling in at his new club, their partnership is developing into a lethal combination that could fire the Gypsies to success in the immediate future.
