ASHTOWN Pound is struggling to cope with hundreds of stray dogs which have been abandoned since January.
The Northside pound on the Navan Road has had to humanly put down up to 40 dogs as it has become increasingly difficult to re-home the animals.
According to manager Donal Moroney, the pound has taken in 723 dogs since the start of the year.
“We have been absolutely inundated, even over the last three weeks,” he told Northside People.
“For one reason or another, we’ve put down approximately five to six per cent of the dogs that have been taken in.
“We destroyed some dogs that we can’t re-home and others that are sick and old.”
The pound is bursting at the seams as all its 66 kennels are fully occupied.
“We are only obliged to keep the dogs for a period of five days before euthanasia is considered,” Mr Money explained.
“Unfortunately, as with all other kennels, when we are full we have to consider the alternative option although we generally keep most dogs for a lot longer in the hope of finding them a new home.”

According to Mr Moroney, the majority of the dogs in the pound are young cross breeds. “We took in a young Labrador cross wandering in Glasnevin and three other dogs which were walking together in Drumcondra,” he said.
“This situation could be avoided with responsible pet ownership. Unfortunately, pets are increasingly seen as disposable objects.”
Outraged dog-lover Glenda Hayde, said the situation is out of control.
“It is ridiculous that there is no regulation on dog ownership,” she told Northside People.
“People are not neutering their animals so the number of unwanted dogs wandering the streets is on the increase.
“Dog owners are getting off scot free with abandoning their animals whenever it suits them.”
She concluded: “I’ve heard of people abandoning their animals when they move house or get new carpets and even when they find they shed too much hair. It is appalling treatment.”
