City council vows to return bandstand

RESIDENTS are calling for the immediate return of a bandstand that was removed from a popular Northside park during work on the Dublin Port Tunnel.
Dublin City Council removed the bandstand at Fairview Park in 2006 to facilitate the completion of vital Port Tunnel work.
The bandstand had been a prominent feature in the park for decades and residents are hoping the city council will stick to a pledge to return it now that the Port Tunnel is operational.
Local residents Donal Somerville and Clive Costello told Northside People they were baffled that the bandstand has not yet made a reappearance.
Mr Somerville pointed to the fact that the city council’s website stated the bandstand would be fully restored and enhanced once the tunnel work was completed in 2006.
“The Port Tunnel has been long up and running but there is still no sign of the bandstand,” Mr Somerville said.
“I would like to know when exactly the bandstand will be replaced as it has been a big feature of the park for many decades.”
A spokeswoman for Dublin City Council told Northside People that the bandstand would definitely be replaced at Fairview Park.
She said the city council has just completed restoring grass in the area of the park where the bandstand used to be located.
“We also have plans to plant trees there and to redesign the park,” the spokeswoman said.
“There will also be a playground and flowerbeds in that area and the bandstand is a big part of these plans.
