Musical bliss from Audiokiss

A NEW band from Howth that has a wealth of experience in the music industry is taking an innovative approach to making a breakthrough into the business.
Audiokiss is a band consisting of former members of In Tua Nua, Christina Calls and Rocky De Valera and The Gravediggers.
The band is currently putting the finishing touches to its debut album that is being recorded in Vicar Street Studios under the tutelage of super-session musician and producer Conor Brady.
There are several unusual factors to be found around the periphery of the project that is Audiokiss.
Firstly, their new album is being entirely self-financed.
Robert Campbell, former Rocky De Valera drummer and songwriter, says: “I suppose you could say it’s about putting your money where your mouth is.
“Times have changed and record companies aren’t tripping over themselves trying to sign bands anymore, so we decided we’d do it ourselves.”

And Campbell should know what he’s taking about. Recently retired from a self-made career in the IT industry, he sees Audiokiss as being partly a quasi-commercial venture along with a creative one.
Says Robert: “Don’t get me wrong, this band is all about killer tunes - full stop. But the way the industry has gone in the last 10 years has changed the way I look at music.”
“I know I listen to jingles, advertisements and movie soundtracks as much as albums these days.
“Look at Glen Hansard. He’s been slaving away with The Frames for years and it looks like a song from a movie soundtrack has eventually broken him.”
Audiokiss is familiar with the tactics of big record companies, especially throughout the ‘80s, featuring as it does Jack Dublin, bass player with In Tua Nua who were signed to both Island and Virgin, two of the world’s then biggest labels.
Dublin elaborates: “The music business has changed, totally changed. There’s no way a major label is going to sign an unknown band from Dublin for a three album deal anymore.
“But hopefully, the experience we all gained down the years in the industry will stand to us this time around.
“I know the music is heavily influenced by bands we grew up with and even played alongside.
“While the new songs are big on melody, there is also a punky raw edge to many of them.”
Vocalist Siobhan Mahon, who sang with Christina Calls and recorded a single with Liam O’Maonlai from Hothouse Flowers, is also quick to point out that valuable lessons have been learned from the band members’ experience with other outfits.
“There really is no room for politics or egos in Audiokiss,” she says.
“We’ve all seen where that can lead and we’re very happy to let the music do the talking.”
And Siobhan is also very happy with the collection of songs Audiokiss have written in the last three months.
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed the number of naff tracks that seem to appear on albums these days,” she states.
“You have two or three strong songs and the rest are basically fillers. Look at the last two REM albums – that won’t be happening with Audiokiss.”
