Fitgerald is on the mark

MARK Fitzgerald, representing Classic Snooker Club, was crowned 2008 Dublin Snooker Federation Senior Champion when he defeated Karl Vernor of Homefarm Snooker Club in the final.
Mark was in fine form, beating Daniel Wilson (Griffith) and Larry O'Dea (Clontarf), both 2-0, to reach the semis.
Andrew Davison from the Classic Club in Finglas and the number 1 seed, recorded good wins over Joe Lyons and Aidan Cuffe from Sportslink to book a semi-final place.
Karl Vernor (Homefarm) beat Anto Lyster (Sportslink) 2-1 and Dan Carroll (Clontarf) 2-0 to meet Andrew in the semis.
Patrick Joyce (Classic) had a good 2-0 win over Ronan Deegan (Sportslink) in the last 16 but came up against a very improved Annette Newman in the quarters.
Patrick won the first frame on the pink ball but gave up in frame two with reds still on the table, Annette winning 78-23.
The third frame was going Annette’s way – she led 36-12 - but Patrick held his cool with breaks of 27 and 22 and took the frame to meet his fellow Classic mate in the semis.

In the semi-finals, Karl Vernor defeated Andrew Davison, 2-1, to reach his first final, while on the other table, Mark Fitzgerald beat Patrick Joyce in a very close encounter, 2-0, to set up a final meeting with Karl.
In the decider, Karl took the first frame with breaks of 23 and 24.
Mark responded with a 28 and a clearance of the colours to level the match at 1-1.
The third and final frame was a scrappy affair with Mark taking blue to black to give him the title.
The championship organisers would like to congratulate Mark on his win and Karl on giving such a fine performance.
They would also like to thank all the clubs and players for their support, Joe Doheny of Harmonstown Snooker Club and his staff for providing excellent playing facilities, Annette Newman for refereeing the final and to all those who helped on the day.
