it.jpgIT may be over 30 years since it last had an athletics teams but a North Dublin school is starting to make up for lost time.
With a new team of athletes in place this year, the boys from Beneavin College in Finglas have already made their mark on the schools’ cross country scene.
Under the guidance of teacher and athletics coach, Aonghus O'Criodhain, Beneavin College recently won the team event at the North Leinster cross-country championships in DCU.
It was a magnificent achievement for the young athletes who will be hoping it is only the beginning of what could be an excellent future in the sport.
Speaking to Dublin People Sport, Aonghus O'Criodhain said he couldn't be happier with the group's progress so far.
Mr O'Criodhain only began teaching at Beneavin College this year and having got the chance to witness the running potential of some of the boys at the school, he decided to put an athletics team together.
"Some of the lads had shown that they could be very good at athletics and I had no doubt that they would do well," Mr O'Criodhain said.
“But they really excelled at the North Leinster championship, as four of the them finished in the top 10.
“However, I did feel going into that event that they had already taken part in a number of races that were a lot tougher which probably stood to them.”

Mr O’Criodhain said he now hopes the team can transfer their success at cross-country running into the track and field events that will be taking place over the coming months.
In preparation for this, Beneavin will be taking part in a triangular competition at Clonliffe Harriers AC, also involving St Aidan’s CBC and St Kevin’s Community College.
“This is still completely new to the lads but it is a great experience for them, and watching them compete and do well has been very satisfactory,” Mr O’Criodhain added.
“They are strong willed and talented and have the chance to now push on from here and realise their potential.”
