LUCAN Cycling Road Club riders maintained their good run of performances and results in the Waller Cup in Bohermeen last Sunday week (March 30).Daniel Kirwan and Brendan Whelan lined up for the club in the Senior 1 event. Both riders were just back from the Tour of the North event and Kirwan showed immediately how well he was going with attacks in the first couple of miles of the 70-mile race. Kirwan went clear in the winning break in the first lap, with Whelan in a chase group behind, and Lucan’s inform rider took an excellent fourth prize in the same time as the winner, Derek Burke, from the Professional Pezula team. Result of Waller Cup Bohermeen, 70 miles: 1st - Derek Burke (Pezula) 2:49:07; 2nd - Craig Sweetman (Stamullen M Donnelly); 3rd - David Peelo (Murphy Surveyors); 4th - Daniel Kirwan (Lucan). There was more good news for the South Dublin club in the Senior 2 race, run over 60 miles of the same circuit. Over 100 competitors from all over Ireland took part in the S2 race. Lucan’s Senior 2 team is one of the strongest in the country, and this was evident in all the early moves and attacks. Riders like Paul Heneghan, Alan Dunne, James Kirwan and Neil O’Connor have been showing great form recently, and a lot was expected from the LCRC lads. Fergus Whelan took another step on his comeback by powering across to the breakaway in the closing miles, and only missing out on third prize when he broke his shoe cleat in the final sprint. Whelan held on for another fourth prize for Lucan on the day. The Senior 3 race provided another prize for Lucan. Enda Connolly showed no sign of tiredness after his good performance in the previous weekend’s Gorey 3-Day event to notch up yet more points in his quest for a Senior 2 licence. Connolly came home in fifth place. The women’s race was part of the National Classic League, and Lucan were delighted to have new rider Maja Dyson line up beside her more experienced teammate Roisin Kennedy. This was Maja’s race debut and the Croatian performed well enough to finish her first ever road race. Meanwhile, Lucan underage rider Ross Cambell was also taking part in his first race for LCRC. Campbell is a product of the club’s successful Saturday morning beginner ‘Spins From The Shop’ programme and the club was happy that the young star for the future was able to finish the event against a lot more experienced opposition. Meanwhile, the previous weekend proved hectic for LCRC with the club’s riders taking part in two events at opposite ends of the country. Senior 1 riders Daniel Kirwan and Brendan Whelan, and Senior 2 rider James Kirwan represented the club at the Tour of the North event, while 10 members took part in the Gorey 3-Day competition in County Wexford. Roisin Kennedy and Frank Billings represented Leinster, while Enda Connelly, John Ennis, Alan Dunne, Brian Reynolds, Fergus Whelan, Kevin Whelan, Neil O'Connor and Paul Heneghan made up a very strong LCRC team.
