docklands.jpgEASTER may have been early this year but it couldn’t come quickly enough for a group of youngsters living in the Docklands area.
Over the school holidays, former Republic of Ireland international and chairman of Sunderland Football Club, Niall Quinn, and his coaching team of experts shared their knowledge with local children during the Docklands Festival of Football at the Tolka Rovers Sports Complex.
As well as the ‘Mighty Quinn’, the coaching team included Alan Kelly, Republic of Ireland goalkeeping coach; Kenny Cunningham, former Republic of Ireland international; Don Givens, Irish under 21 manager; Chris Nichol, former Northern Ireland international; and Katie Taylor, Republic of Ireland international and World Champion boxer.
The festival, open to 8-13-year-olds from the Docklands, has been developed to help the youngsters develop their soccer skills and become more confident and accomplished players.
The Docklands Festival of Football is part of the Docklands Authority’s Social Regeneration strategy and its commitment to promoting and supporting education and social development in the Docklands.
Gerry Kelly, director of Social Regeneration for the Docklands Authority, believes the Docklands Festival of Football has significant benefits for the whole community and not just those children who take part.
“The festival is a great opportunity for these young people to learn new skills, make new friends and perhaps even nurture future sporting careers,” stated Mr Kelly.
