Locals stumped after trees get the chop

FINGLAS locals are at a loss to understand why several three-foot tree stumps have been left along their paths for over nine months.
Sixteen luscious maple trees were cut down last summer as they were uprooting the footpaths along Wellmount Court.
However, the unsightly stumps still remain and local residents fear that they could pose a safety hazard.
“One neighbour even took out his chainsaw to remove the trunk outside his house recently,” local resident John Libreri said.
“This is a ridiculous situation, one which would not occur in an area such as Foxrock.
“There used to be around eight of these big trees on either side of the road until one day some council workers came and chopped them all down.”
He added: “None of the residents were consulted about what was going to happen so we were even more confused to see the stumps just left there.”

Mr Libreri explained how some council workers returned to the estate a few weeks later to remove the stumps.
“They managed to remove some of barely half a dozen of the tree trunks and repair a similar number of sections of the footpaths until they ran into trouble with some telecom cables,” he told Northside People.
“The workers then completely abandoned the work and nothing has been done since so we have been left with holes on one side of the road in which replacement trees will be planted.
“On the other side of the road there are at least seven or eight tree stumps.”
According to Mr Libreri, the stumps pose a serious health and safety concern.
“The footpaths are damaged, there are holes in the paths where replacement trees should have been planted and someone could trip over some of the stumps that are just left there,” he said.
Another local resident echoed Mr Libreri’s sentiments.
“These tree trunks are complete eyesores,” she told Northside People.
“I know this is Finglas but it would not be allowed to continue in any other area of Dublin.”
A spokesperson for Dublin City Council confirmed that council workers had run into “serious problems with cables” when they were removing the stumps and repairing the footpaths.
“The cables are very close to the path and we are currently in discussion with the company in relation to the issue,’ she said.
“But as of yet we have not got any reply from them.”
She added: “Some of the tree stumps are of a certain size as anything smaller would be a hazard. There are a number of wheelchair users in that area and we are satisfied that the paths are still wide enough to facilitate them.”
