Green cabs hit the summer streets PDF Print E-mail

IRELAND’S only completely emission free passenger service returned to the streets of Dublin this month for the summer.
The free Ecocabs service, which consists of a fleet of futuristic muscle powered tricycles, first hit the streets last year.
The cabs are designed to discourage unnecessary, short-distance motorised travel and operators say it’s also a free and fun way of promoting healthier and more sustainable alternatives within the congested city centre area.
Entrepreneurs Andrew Casey and Olaf O’Moore got the idea for the environmentally friendly cabs when they travelled abroad.
“I saw the cabs in operation in Japan and Korea and Olaf saw them in Holland and Australia and we were both very impressed with concept,” said Andrew.
“Although the cabs were really a tourist attraction in those countries and not so much an environmental project which is what we see them as here in Ireland.”
Travelling in an Ecocab doesn’t cost the punter a cent, as they are paid for in full by corporate sponsors hoping to communicate their own interest in environmental issues while also utilising the Ecocab’s unique advertising space.

Since their launch response to the service has been phenomenal and the Ecocabs fleet has more than doubled in size - allowing more than 2,000 passengers per week to travel for free around the city centre – thereby helping reduce Dublin’s carbon footprint.
Andrew Casey said that the company was now giving employment to approximately 20 people.
“I suppose it’s the ideal job if you want to keep fit, or if you’re interested in doing a lot of training,” said Andrew.
“You do have to be extremely fit to drive an Ecocab around Dublin and some of our drivers are athletes and sports people.”
Both Andrew and Olaf have received huge credit for their company’s role in highlighting the need for sustainable alternatives.
They’ve also been recognised by business associations and have been nominated for several business and entrepreneurship awards.
This year Ecocabs will expand its unique service into other Irish cities including Cork and Belfast.
Ecocabs are available to shuttle the public around Dublin city centre from 11am-7pm, seven days a week operating from designated pick-up points.
