Camogie player receives scholarship grant PDF Print E-mail

gamogie.jpgA DUBLIN camogie player has been chosen as one of this year's recipients of innovative scholarship grants.
Maria O'Sullivan, a student at Dublin City University (DCU), will receive her share of the e7,000 allocated through the Cumann Camogaiochta Ard Oideachais (CCAO) Scholarship Grants for 2007/2008.
This is the third year of the scheme and there were 28 applicants for this year’s allocation.
The bursaries, which are funded by the Irish Sports Council, are given to those who have helped the development of camogie within their own clubs and colleges.
O’Sullivan, who was part of the Dublin side that won both the Leinster and All-Ireland Junior titles in 2005, will have a number of responsibilities to carry out as a result of her scholarship.
The DCU student has to profile two secondary schools in the catchment area of Na Fianna, one that plays camogie and one that doesn’t.
She must then survey a group of 20 girls in Transition Year to get their views on camogie, on why girls play sport and why they gave up.
The title of her survey is ‘Camogie: It’s for girls.’
Liz Howard, president of the Camogie Association, sees the CCAO Scholarship Grants as a vital stepping-stone in the development of the game.
“The awarding of Third Level scholarships enhances the profile of camogie at that level," Ms Howard said.
"The recipients will, in the future, have a major influence on the modern Ireland in their chosen career paths and I hope that they will continue to play and promote camogie as the most skilful women’s game in the world.”
