martial.jpgA NORTH Dublin martial arts club is on the crest of a wave after its recent performance at an event in Malta.
Members of Traditional Kenpo Karate Darndale (TKKD) participated in the Four Nations Championship and returned home with a number of medals.
In the Junior Division, Darcie Sherlock, Dylan Bollard, Alan McDermott, Nadine Brennan and Carl Walerowicz, all aged nine, took part in the Kata and Kumite (fighting and forms) categories.
They came second and third in their finals and received medals and cups for their performances.
Rachel O’Keeffe (15) came second in a hard fought individual fight in Kumite, while Sue Reynolds (19) and Michelle Browne (20) performed very well in the Kata and Kumite. David Holland (13) also gave an excellent performance in his category.
Willie Bollard (56), Derek Sherlock (45), and Robbie Squires (32) competed in the Veterans’ Division.
The trio represented TKKD as a team in the Kumite section and came joint third, winning three cups for TKKD.
It was further good news for TKKD, which was founded by Brian Bollard, John Doyle, Mick Burke and Natalie Mooney in May 2004.
In a few short years, the club has proved very successful, having achieved All-Ireland Championships and Leinster Championships, both in Kumite and Kata.
Derek Desmond, chief coach of ONAKAI, has also called some of the students into his squad for training.
This has provided a great opportunity for the young talent in Darndale/Belcamp to blossom further.
Meanwhile, TKKD would like to thank the local community and everyone who supported the club; a big thanks to Sharon Kinsella who put a lot of effort into raising funds; Father Terry on his generous sponsorship; St Vincent De Paul; Larry Maher; Tasty Bread for all their reliable support; and Inspector Conlon at Coolock Garda Station for his involvement with the raffle.
TKKD trains at the Community Hall in Darndale on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7pm to 8pm for juniors (aged 6 to 14) and senior classes are from 7.30pm to 9pm. Defence training classes for interested adults take place on Saturdays from 1-3pm.
TKKD is hoping to host an All-Ireland Kenpo competition this summer. For further information on TKKD email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
