THE Labour Party is busy drawing up its plans for next year’s local elections.
Just a few weeks after announcing that Brian McDowell will contest the Donaghmede ward along with sitting councillor, Sean Kenny, the party has named its candidate for the Howth ward.
Local activist Cian O’ Callaghan (28) grew up and went to school in the area. He has been involved in a wide range of political campaigns including environmental, anti-war and youth issues.
Speaking at the Labour selection convention, held in the Marine Hotel, Sutton, Mr O’Callaghan said: "The Howth, Sutton and Baldoyle area is coming under pressure from property speculators who seek to make a quick profit at the expense of the community.
“The Labour Party is best placed to represent the interests of the community over those of property speculators.
“It was a Labour Environment Minister, Brendan Howlin, who directed Fingal County Council to make a Special Amenity Area Order (SAAO) to protect Howth from over development.
“A strong Labour voice is needed at council level to campaign for local communities."
Mr O’Callaghan said that as a student representative, he has secured a tripling in the level of student accommodation in Ireland.
“I hope to be able to provide similar strong and effective representation at local level," he added.
"The local elections in 2009 will be an opportunity for voters to voice their strong concerns over how the Government is strangling the health care service.
“The recruitment freeze must be lifted immediately so that essential frontline staff are hired for vacant posts.”
