New graffiti campaign demanded PDF Print E-mail

A NORTHSIDE councillor has called for a new campaign to deal with the removal of graffiti.
Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Anne Carter (Lab), said that while walking around the Donaghmede/Raheny ward, she has noted the alarming spread of graffiti on many sidewalls and common areas of estates.
At a Dublin City Council meeting in March, Cllr Carter demanded an urgent review of the anti-graffiti programme.
“Given the persistent build up of graffiti on walls throughout the North Central Area, I asked City Manager John Tierney for a full review of the effectiveness of the current graffiti removal programme, and if he would reconsider urgently allowing each Area Office to have its own graffiti removal team,” said Cllr Carter.
According to Mr Tierney, Dublin City Council has provided a budget of e750,000 for the removal of graffiti in the city in 2008.
This will generally be used to remove graffiti from public property and offensive/racist graffiti from private property.
A pilot scheme, funded by the Department of Justice, ended in 2007 and under this scheme, graffiti was being removed from private property where the permission of the building owner was obtained.
A new Government funded scheme has recently been awarded by Pobal and the details of this scheme are being examined at present.
In relation to graffiti removal teams, Mr Tierney informed Cllr Carter that in previous years a graffiti removal crew was assigned to each of the areas during the summer period and this arrangement will also apply this year from May.
The details of this arrangement are being examined at present.
Cllr Carter welcomed Dublin City Council’s commitment to deal with the problem.
“I would urge the city council to put the graffiti removal crew on the ground as soon as possible since the major deterrence to graffiti is its immediate removal and measures to deter the offenders concerned,” added Cllr Carter.
