DUBLIN Zoo is inviting Northsiders to help its keepers find a name for a new Asian elephant calf which was born on February 17.
The bull calf is settling into his new family really well and is impressing the zoo team with his personality, antics and boundless energy.
“We are really pleased with his progress,” said Assistant Zoo Director, Paul O’Donoghue.
“At only four weeks old he’s proving to be an independent little chap who spends a fair bit of his time exploring away from his mother, Yasmin, and visitors are loving him too.”
The only thing missing from this happy story is that zoo keepers don’t know what to call the calf.
Zoo officials have now invited the public to help the keepers come up with a suitable name for this adventurous youngster.
The winner of the naming competition will receive a VIP day out in the zoo for up to six people.
Zoo Director, Leo Oosterweghel, said the zoo had a great response when it asked the public to help choose a name for a female elephant calf, Asha, last July.
“So we would like to, once again, ask the public for their suggestions,” he said.
“There has been huge amount of interest and speculation about the newborn’s name already and with such a terrific response last year, we hope to land on a similarly suitable Indian name for our male calf.”
Those interested in suggesting a name for the elephant are asked to log onto www.dublinzoo.ie and submit their suggestion online, along with the reason why Dublin Zoo should choose that particular name.
Postal entries can be sent to Name the Calf Competition, Dublin Zoo, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8. Entrants should also include their name, address and telephone number when entering the  competition.
Closing date for receipt of entries is Saturday, April 12. The male calf can be seen in the Kaziranga Forest Trail in Dublin Zoo, alongside mother Yasmin (18), Bernhardine (24), Anak (4) and Asha, (10 months).
