Art exhibition makes a splash

THE old swimming pool in Ballymun has been reopened to showcase a unique art exhibition by over 20 international artists.
The artists’ work has transformed the pool, the changing rooms, the bathrooms and the viewing balcony into a spectacular visual treat.
‘Art in the Life World’ was launched at the end of February by local art group, Breaking Ground, with a major conference on the topic of autonomy in the arts.
Curator of the event, Aisling Prior, says the exhibition comments on society in uncompromising, audacious and provocative ways.
“Breaking Ground is interested in pushing the boundaries with regard to who and what contemporary art is for,” she said.
“As with previous projects, such as Seamus Nolan’s hugely successful ‘Hotel Ballymun’ and Jochen Gerz’s tree-planting project ‘A Map to Care’, we are committed to exploring the agency of art and how artists may effect change in society in their capacity as artists.”
Artists exhibiting include Santiago Sierra, who has represented Spain at the Venice Biennale. He’s showing two slide projections of differing views of Mexicans chiselling the word ‘submission’ in large text along a length of the US border.
And talented Seamus Nolan has made a beautiful arched bridge across the width of the pool from wood salvaged from other parts of the building.
A beautiful film by Japanese artist, Hiraki Sawa, is projected in a changing room and Cecily Brennan’s quiet, life affirming multi-media piece “Tony” is also showing for the first time in Dublin.
The exhibition is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 1-6 pm until April 12. Admission is free and all are welcome.
